Episode 1 talks abouI’d like to share the inspiration behind the podcast name and the concept of the feral female. As a wife, mother, caregiver, and a woman shaped by profound change that has divided my life into two distinct halves, I speak to those women who have developed strength in unexpected ways. I recount the heartbreaking story of my husband’s tragic heart attack and the ensuing brain injury that left him reliant on a wheelchair. This moment marked the beginning of my journey as a Feral Female.

Our Interview With Good Day Sacramento

Jason Ellefson and his wife, Shawna recall the day that changed their lives forever. Jason suffered a heart attack at band practice, and fell into a coma.

"What began as a completely normal, even joyful day quickly turned into an emergency that altered everything."

I’m incredibly grateful to the team at CBS GoodDay Sacramento for giving Jason and me the opportunity to share our story—our journey through resilience, community, and hope after a moment that forever changed our lives.

What began as a completely normal, even joyful day quickly turned into an emergency that altered everything. It was my first day at a new job. Jason was getting ready to play bass with his rock band that night. Life felt full, busy, and promising.

At 8:30 p.m., in the middle of a set, Jason collapsed.

His bandmates immediately called 911. One of them—his guitar player—began CPR. He had completed his CPR certification just two days earlier.

That timing alone still gives me chills.

Jason survived four cardiac arrests, suffered a spinal stroke, and was placed into a medically induced coma. His medical team believed he would never come out of it—that if he did, he would remain in a vegetative state.

          I refused to accept that.

I became a feral female in those hospital rooms. I was not going to give up on him—the kindest, funniest, most loving, and most generous man I’ve ever known.

          And my instincts were right.

Jason emerged from the coma battered, bruised, and changed—but conscious. He had lost nearly 80% of his memory, and our lives as we knew them were gone. But he was still here.

As we quickly learned, surviving a medical catastrophe is only the beginning. Medical insurance does not cover everything—especially the things Jason truly needs to continue recovering and to move from simply surviving to actually thriving.

I left my job to become Jason’s full-time caregiver and advocate. Every day since has been a lesson in patience, determination, and learning how to navigate a system that wasn’t built for long-term healing.

Our goals now are focused on giving Jason the tools to regain independence and quality of life—things like a medical service dog, robotic legs for therapy, and an accessible golf cart so he can move more freely and safely. These aren’t luxuries; they are bridges back to living.

Through Help Hope Live, we’ve been able to pursue these critical needs—but something else unexpected has emerged along the way: purpose.

I remember feeling completely lost in the early days. Alone.

Overwhelmed. With no roadmap and no one telling me what came next. I don’t know why this happened to us, but I do know that I want to help other people—especially other women—who suddenly find themselves in the role of caregiver, advocate, and protector.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: you are stronger than you think, even when you don’t feel like you are. Trust your instincts. Ask questions. Be loud when you need to be. And don’t let anyone tell you that hope is unrealistic.

To the wives, caregivers, and supporters walking this path beside someone they love—please know you are not alone. There is a community out here that understands the fear, the exhaustion, and the fierce love it takes to keep going.

We are still writing our story. Jason is still fighting. And together, we are choosing hope—every single day.

Sometimes You Have to Be The Code Grey

Because My Passion For My Husband Exceeds All Else

In a hospital, a Code Grey means there is a combative or aggressive situation—usually a patient or family member who is no longer quiet, compliant, or agreeable. It represents intensity, confrontation, and protecting someone at all costs.

I would never condone violence. But when you are fighting for the love of your life—and you see doctors making decisions that cause more harm than help—sometimes, emotionally and instinctively, you have to go Code Grey.

My husband survived four cardiac arrests. He fought for his life. Then, when we were finally out of crisis, we were transferred to the telemetry floor—where they monitor the heart. The doctor there was… arrogant, to put it gently.

My husband had suffered anoxic brain injury from being “gone” so long, as well as a spinal cord stroke from lack of blood flow. But he was also proving every doctor wrong—gaining ground every day. So I protected him fiercely. He was like a fragile eggshell with cracks—and I held him carefully, trying to prevent anything from making those cracks worse.

I told the doctor not to give him a stimulant “to help with brain recovery.” I knew my husband. I knew it would agitate him. But the doctor gave it anyway—and removed most of his pain medications—even though they still didn’t know why his legs weren’t working. He was making major treatment changes with incomplete information.

My husband became agitated, aggressive, not himself. Yes, some of that could be brain injury—but something in me said this was the medication.

Later that day, we tried to help him into a chair, and suddenly his face drained of color. He began sweating. His heart rate spiked. It was terrifying. I asked more questions—and learned the full extent of what had been done without consent. The nurses were furious. I was beyond furious.

          So yes—I went Code Grey.

I will spare the full scene, but when you love someone the way I love Jason, consequences don’t exist in that moment. It becomes primal. Protective. Survival. Even if the threat is wearing a white coat.

During our 89 days in the hospital, I witnessed constant tension between nurses and doctors—nurses pleading for what patients needed, doctors brushing them off, ego overshadowing care. There is no room for ego in the ICU. What happened to first, do no harm?

After the confrontation, his stimulants were stopped and his pain meds restored. Within one day, he returned to himself.

(And yes— I rest my case.)

This was never about my ego. This was about a man who literally came back from death and was fighting with everything he had. And you better believe I was going to fight right alongside him—to the last breath if needed.

Yes, I said it, I know I know, some of ya’ll hate to fish But there is something so primal about catching your food (we do catch & release) But sometimes getting your hands dirty and pushing yourself to do something different is good for growth and self esteem. It’s a quiet yet mind focusing task, watching the tip of the pole….watching your bobber go under knowing it’s go time. Give it a try and hey if it’s big enough and legal in your area take it home and make your family a meal you caught yourself.

I cannot tell you enough about the benefits of merely going outside, taking off your shoes and socks and just simply standing in the grass, the earth has a vibration and so do YOU! If you just breathe in and out, close your eyes….you will be surprised how “lighter” you feel. If feeling adventurous lay down and look up at the sky and trees. Just listen to the natural surroundings. Those are the sounds that bring you back to center. Not all the electronics in the house. Give your nervous system and spirit a break and go grounding and heck while your at it hug a tree! We aren’t meant to constantly have something under us or on our feet, a shoe, a sock, a house, concrete. The earth has a vibration and we cannot truly connect to it unless we make direct contact with it. YOU also have a vibration and if your feeling low go outside into the grass ( socks and shoes off) and just stand there, or lay, and close your eyes and just breathe, in and out. Close your eyes and listen to the birds, or planes above. Let your other senses awaken for a bit. I recommend doing this as much as you can.

Either its for your family and you or a time for you to re connect with your spouse, or even just time away from the world by yourself, these sites offer a variety of ideas for short to long stays. You can even find places that are accessible and allow dogs. From Yurts, to homes with private pools. If you’re on a budget try finding places that are guest houses, that way you save money but can still take advantage of the amenities. Airbnb.com or VRBO.com

We all know the benefits of walking and running, lose weight, tone up yada yada. BUT! Just walking outside for 20 minutes per day will awaken your senses. Help to remove mental blockages. Help you connect with nature. Boost serotonin levels and boost overall mood. This is Free99 !!!

Sober living isn’t just about staying away from substances — it’s about healing, rebuilding, and becoming the version of yourself that you were always meant to be.

It’s not easy. Some days are hard. Some days feel impossible. But every day you choose sobriety is a day you choose life.

Here, I share my own journey — the ups, the downs, and the tools that helped me stay grounded. Whether you're just getting started or have been sober for years, I hope you find something here that reminds you:

          You’re not alone.

          You’re stronger than you think.

          And you're worth fighting for.

Let’s keep going — one honest, beautiful day at a time.

Helping you heal, grow, and move forward — one step at a time.

Recovery looks different for everyone. Whether you're healing from addiction, trauma, loss, or life-altering change, the right tools can make all the difference.

Here are some of the tools that have helped me — and may help you too — as you walk your own path to recovery:

          Self-Care Essentials

Self-care isn’t a luxury — it’s a lifeline. Especially when you’re surviving something hard, showing up for others, or just trying to make it through the day.

This space is for the little things that make a big difference. The rituals, reminders, and routines that help you feel grounded, whole, and like you again.

Solo Retreats As A Way To Normalize

We All Need Time Away. Here's How to Take Advantage of Time Away For Yourself.

We’ve all been there—overstretched, overwhelmed, and over all the drama and struggles life throws at us. As busy women, society has made us feel like we can and should do it all. But where’s the reprieve?

“Self-care Sunday” isn’t enough. Men have their golf, bowling, and time with friends—but women rarely take time away on a regular basis. We often feel guilty stepping away from the kids, family, pets, and household chores… but no more.

It’s time to normalize solo retreats—not girls’ trips, but you, by yourself.

It’s harder than you think to be alone, but I promise you—it’s worth it.

I’m currently on a solo trip for my mental health. You can pay for a structured retreat that includes meals, yoga, and meditation—or you can design your own. Find a quiet place on a farm, near the ocean, or even close to home. On Airbnb or VRBO, search “nearby”—you’d be surprised how many peaceful getaways are just minutes away.

I’m staying at a farm about 20 minutes from home in a cozy cottage overlooking a vegetable garden, a hen house with 15 chickens, an Olympic-sized pool, and a huge hot tub. The fridge was stocked with fresh eggs—straight from the hens. And let me tell you, fresh eggs over store-bought? Game changer.

The hosts have been wonderful, but the best part is what I’ve done for myself. I practiced yoga in a meadow using a YouTube video. I grounded myself by walking barefoot through the grass. I explored the garden, observing how each plant was growing. I sat by the pool and worked on my book and blog, feeling refreshed and unburdened.

If writing isn’t your thing, bring that book you’ve been meaning to read. Or take a journal—write about how you’ve shown up for yourself this year, what you need to feel whole, healthy, and at peace. Set realistic goals: get in shape, protect your boundaries, envision what you want the next year of your life to look like. Or simply sit in silence.

Speaking of silence—before leaving, I told my family where I’d be and put my phone on Do Not Disturb. Emergency contacts can still reach me, but everyone knows I needed this time to recharge and reconnect with myself.

If you explain it like this, they’ll understand:

“In order to be my best—for me and for you—I need to take this mental health solo retreat.”

          Who could argue with that?

I’ll admit, I’ve caught myself wanting to call a friend, FaceTime my mom, or scroll social media. Each time, I stopped myself. If I can’t be comfortable in my own company for two days, that’s something I need to work on.

This experience has reconnected me to me—the little girl me, the teenage me, the twenty-something me, and the 47-year-old me. Wow—47.

You might get resistance from others about taking a solo retreat, but remember: no one will love you the way you love yourself. Sometimes, you have to do what honors you, even if others don’t understand—and that’s okay. It’s not your job to explain it.

During this retreat, I haven’t been emotionally responsible for anyone but myself. And when I go home tomorrow, I know I’ll be better equipped to handle everything on my plate.

You can stay in a hotel, cabin, yurt, or cottage. Choose whatever fits your soul. I wanted absolute peace and quiet, so I created a self-guided retreat to reset and recharge.

So if you’re up for it—book your solo women’s retreat now!

          Creative Hobbies

Engaging in creative hobbies can provide a therapeutic outlet for stress relief and self-expression, helping you reconnect with yourself, process emotions in a healthy way, and find moments of peace and joy in the midst of chaos.

Exploring new places can rejuvenate your spirit and offer fresh perspectives on life and wellness, reminding you that healing isn’t always found in stillness — sometimes, it’s waiting for you on a winding road, a quiet beach, or a city street you’ve never walked before.

Incorporating mindfulness into daily routines can enhance mental clarity and promote emotional well-being, helping you stay grounded in the present, manage stress more effectively, and create space for intentional healing — one breath, one moment at a time.
